A Special Meal at Old Downton Lodge

We’re always keen to share local gems with our guests – and a recent experience endorsed just how lucky we are to have such good dining on our doorstep.

A birthday treat led us to Old Downton Lodge, tucked away just outside Leintwardine, a short drive from The School House. We’ve passed signs for Old Downton Lodge many times on the way to Ludlow, always curious. This felt like the perfect opportunity to discover what it is like.

From the moment we arrived, it felt like a real occasion. We began with pre-dinner drinks in the cosy sitting room, sinking into comfortable sofas and admiring an impressive collection of spirits. It set the tone beautifully for what was to come.

Dinner itself was a true experience. Our table overlooked the beautiful courtyard of the 18th-century former farmhouse, while the dining room had a grand, almost medieval feel – elegant without being overwhelming. The service was impeccable throughout, attentive yet relaxed, making us feel like special guests.

The food was simply superb. What was described as a three-course meal turned into something even more special, with delicious canapés to start, a delightful pre-dessert of sticky toffee pudding, and petit fours to finish. Every course was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavour.

While it’s certainly a step up from some establishments, the quality and overall experience made it feel like excellent value for money.

If you’re staying with us and looking to treat yourselves, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Old Downton Lodge. It’s just one of the many fantastic dining experiences that make the Ludlow area such a wonderful place to visit.
